What's the difference between Office 365 Pro Plus and Office 201x Pro Plus?
Almost nothing. Functionally Office 365 Pro Plus is the same to use as the version of Office you have on your departmental computer. The differences are in how it is installed and updated:
- Office 365 Pro Plus can be downloaded directly from the Office 365 website
- Office 365 Pro Plus is can be installed on personal computers, even if they are not used for work purposes
- Office 365 Pro Plus is automatically updated / upgraded by Microsoft. Currently it is based on Office 2013, but in February 2016 it will be updated to match Office 2016
- Office 365 Pro Plus is activated by signing in with your Office 365 credentials.
Who can use it?
In October 2015 the University purchased a site licence for Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office that covers all departments and the majority of colleges. As a result all staff and students of the School of Clinical Medicine and the School of Biological Sciences are licensed for Office 365 and Windows upgrades and Office Pro Plus for departmental PCs. University visitors are not covered by the licence. For more information see Microsoft Licencing at the University
More information on Office for departmental PCs can be found here.
When will Office 365 be available?
Office 365 will be available in January / February 2016. As Office 365 is an online subscription service, an account is required to be able to log in access the services. CSCS is currently in the process of creating accounts for its supported users, and the service should be available in January 2016. Skype for Business and OneDrive for Business will not be available immediately at launch as these services require additional preparation.
How will it be made available?
CSCS will email a link to instructions at launch.
Which account do I use to sign into Office 365?
Microsoft uses your username to determine where you come from, and who to pass the login request to. CSCS supported users use their Domain credentials to log into Office 365. This is what you use to log into departmental computers, or your webmail.Depending on your department, you will need to enter your username in the following format:
- If you are in the Clinical School, then use firstname.lastname@example.org - currently available to Students and Staff
- If you are in Zoology, use email@example.com - currently available to Students and Staff
- If you are in the SLCU, use firstname.lastname@example.org - currently available to Students and Staff
If you are not supported by CSCS then you should likely be using your email@example.com to login.
Why can't Office 365 Pro Plus be installed on Departmental Computers?
Personal and Departmental computers use different kinds of licences. Personal computers should use Office 365 Pro Plus which is licensed and activated to your Office 365 account, and you have a maximum of 5 concurrent installations. Departmental computers should use Office 2013 Pro Plus, which is licensed on a per computer basis so that they can be shared or moved without causing complications. Office 2013 Pro Plus can be installed from https://software.medschl.cam.ac.uk
I'm a student, and I received an invitation to use Office 365 from the University Information Services, what should I do?
There are multiple Office 365 instances in the University - all CSCS supported users are included in the CSCS instance. There is a University Office 365 instance for other departments and undergraduate students that uses Raven credentials - if you log into this you will receive an error that you have no services available. If you have an @medschl.cam.ac.uk email address then you should log in using that.
What happens when I leave the University?
The license for your copy of Office 365 Pro Plus will be cancelled when you leave the University and you will begin to receive a warning message that you have 30 days to purchase a personal licence for Office 365. After this time Office 365 will go into read-only mode. Documents stored on your local machine will remain unaffected, and can still be worked on using any licensed copy of the Office software.
No, unfortunately not. Office 365 is only available for Windows (7, 8.1 and 10), Mac OSX (10.7.4 and later), iOS and Android.
